As I knew nothing about wood, I had assumed when we bought our place that it would all be fine. Rot wasn’t something which I knew much about, but I also hadn’t heard anyone mention it when we bought our barn either. For these two reasons I suppose I was a bit naïve. OK, very naïve about what was in store for us…I just thought all the wood in the old barn would be usable. But I wasn’t right about that…

What actually happened was this: probably about a quarter of the wood was useless and had to come down. The rest of it, though, was very old but also very hard Oak. It was going to be fine!
